Enabling Grace...that Overcomes Depression
...A Principle of Abiding Truth
from Psalm 77
Psalm 77 offers some of the greatest instruction to guide us through the impossibilities that life has to offer. We divide this Psalm it into two parts. The FIRST reveals the quest of a man—a religious man, if you please—whose thoughts, prayers, and relationship with God centered on himself. All his trust in the Lord turned into questions of doubt, fear, and misunderstanding. This religious occupation with self brought severe depression.
The SECOND part of the Psalm reveals how, through a simple act of the mind—the ability to remember—the man turned from centering on himself to centering on God. What a difference!
Depression left. Instead of "Has God forgotten to be gracious?”
The question of a depressed person, he began to exclaim, "Who is so great a God as our God “—The outburst of a soul set free.
I discovered this interesting outline in
Psalm 77:1—Occupation with self
:7-l0a—Its sure results.
:10b-11—Occupation with God.
:13-20—Its sure results.
Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart,
all ye that HOPE in the LORD.—Psalm 31:24
DEAR LORD, the hope of my heart grew weak through the trial upon me. But, I have made a decided turn toward your merciful offer of help. I am ready now to rest in the grace and peace You have brought into my life. Please settle this in me.
